Raul Garcia’s late strike cancelled out James Rodriguez’s goal as Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid played out a 1-1 draw in the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday. The game did not live up to its expectations as the first half failed to create any clear chances with both sides restricted to long range efforts. Newly-signed Atletico striker Mario Mandzukic had the best effort of the first half with a strike but Iker Casillas was up to the task.
Casillas was called into action a few minutes later doing a splendid job to deny Saul from the edge of the box. World player of the year Cristiano Ronaldo had been quiet for most of the opening half but could have given Los Blancos the lead just before the half-time break when he failed to guide his header on target after he was picked up by Gareth Bale. The home team should have taken the lead again when Bale’s stinging free-kick was palmed by Atleti goalkeeper Miguel Angel Moyas into the way of Tony Kroos who failed to beat the keeper and his shot went over the bar.
The introduction of Angel Di Maria to the game saw the game come to life, as the Argentine kept making those dangerous runs on the left flank. The hosts eventually got the opener in the 80th minute through Rodriguez whose deflected shot managed to squeeze past Moyas. Los Rojiblancos’ equaliser came two minutes in to added time as an unmarked Garcia tapped home from a corner kick to grab a crucial away goal for Diego Simeone’s side.
