Five-time champion Roger Federer defeated Samuel Groth of Australia 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in the second round of the US Open on Friday. The Swiss will now face Marcel Granollers in the next round. Groth also had his moments on court including the break that brought him up to 4-2 in the third set but ultimately made too many errors.
Earlier South Africa’s Kevin Anderson won through to the men’s singles third round after a four set win over Poland’s Jerzy Janowicz. Anderson dropped the first set 7-6 but stormed back 6-2, 6-1, 6-3 and served 15 aces along the way. Raven Klaasen and American doubles teammate Eric Butorac are through to the men’s doubles third round after a 6-7, 6-2, 1-0 victory over Robert Lindstedt and Jurgen Melzer. The Swedish/Austrian duo retired at 1-0 down in the third.
