World number one Rafael Nadal needed three sets to progress past Andy Murray to the Rome Masters semi-finals on Friday. Nadal was thrashed 6-1 in the opening by the Scot. However the Spaniard rallied back 6-3, 7-5 to confirm his place in Saturday’s action. Novak Djokovic is also through to the semi-finals of the Italian Open after a three set victory over Spain’s David Ferrer on Friday. The Serb won through 7-5, 6-4, 6-3 to progress to a final four meeting against Milos Raonic. The Canadian progressed to the Rome Masters semi-finals with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 triumph over Jeremy Chardy. The Frenchman had ousted Roger Federer earlier in the week but was toppled by the Canadian in the quarter-finals. Grigor Dimitrov took the first set against Tommy Haas 6-2 before the German failed to take the court for the second owing to injury and subsequently retired.
In the women’s event at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, Serena Williams eased past China’s Shuai Zhang 6-1, 6-3 to confirm her place in the semi-finals. The world number one American will face Ana Ivanovic on Saturday. Ivanovic booked her berth in the final four after a hard-fought 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Carla Suarez Navarro. Hometown heroine Sara Errani took out Li Na in three sets 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 to book her place in the final four where she will meet former world number one Jelena Jankovic. The Serb saw off Agnieszka Radwanska 6-4, 6-4 on Rome’s clay courts.
