The Pumas beat the Free state Cheetahs 31-17 in an excting Absa Currie Cup at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein on Saturday. The Cheetahs got off to a very rocky start in the campaign with a poor performance against the Mpumalanga men showing that they lacked experience. The visitors went over courtesy of Jannie Du Plessis in the 33rd minute. At the break Jimmy Stonehouse’s side were leading 16-7.
In the second half the Pumas continued their dominance of the scrums and forced several penalties that allowed them to relieve some of the pressure applied by the hosts. Naka Drotske’s side were in more trouble in the 72nd minute when Pumas winger Rosco Spekman stepped through the Cheetahs defenders to score. Cheetahs winger Rayno Benjamin’s yellow card five minutes from full-time did not do his side any favours and the Pumas replacement lock Marius Coetzer crossed for a final try.
The win sees the Pumas sitting in third position on the Currie Cup log.
