Argentina continued its preparation for the Rugby World Cup Pool C clash against Tonga. Los Pumas play the Pacific Island side on Sunday in Leicester. The Tongans defeated Namibia on Tuesday night 35-21.
Argentine head coach Daniel Hourcade spent most of Wednesday working with his players on individual skills and set pieces. The players spent the afternoon mostly resting and recovering. The South Americans have never taken on the Sea Eagles in a Test match but many Pumas players played Tonga’s south sea rivals Fiji as recently as March this year as part of the Pampas XV.
Martin Gaitan, head coach of the Pampas side, says there are similarities between the Fijians and the team in red: ‘Maybe it’s a little messy but it will be very hard and the way they play can be dangerous, because they have play makers. Surely Tonga will be of better quality than that time (against Pampas), as it has on its roster several players operating in New Zealand and in the best clubs in Europe. They will be a complicated and difficult opponent, something that had happened to us in the Pacific.’
Hourcade will name his match day squad on Friday.
