The Pumas fought back to earn a 37-37 draw with the Cheetahs in an Absa Currie Cup encounter at the Mbombela Stadium on Saturday. The home side opened the scoring in the sixth minute through a Justin Van Staden penalty after the Cheetahs were penalised for illegal scrummaging. However after some resistance from the men from Bloem the hosts conceded a penalty and the scores were level at 3-3.
The hosts were not fazed by the score line as they took the lead with a penalty followed by a try from Jaco Bouwer. Both sides continued to trade blows as they headed into the the final stages of the first half. The men from the Free State however snuck ahead with an eight point lead after tries from Sergeal Petersen, Teboho Mohoje and Francois Venter with score at 24-16.
In the second stanza the men from Nelspruit were fired up but Franco Smith’s side picked up where they left off opening the scoring in the second 40 when De Wet Kruger went over from a driving maul to stretch ahead further. MJ Mentz’s charges did manage to keep their tally ticking over as they went over for their second of the match. Despite the visitors extending their lead the Mbombela outfit did not give and by the end of the 80 minutes they were all square at 37-37.
