Paris Saint-Germain completed their Uefa Champions League group stage campaign with a 2-0 triumph over Shakhtar Donetsk at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday night. With the already existing assurance of second spot in Group A, Laurent Blanc’s side secured the win with second-half goals from Lucas Moura and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Shakhtar failed to create enough chances for a draw or a win, but they will play in the knockout stage of the Europa League after finishing third.
In the ninth minute PSG missed the chance at a first goal when Anton Kanibolotskiy made a huge error by gifting the ball to Ibrahimovic, who failed to finish, sending a chipped effort over the crossbar. Despite both teams enjoying spells on top, the quality in the attacking areas was disappointing.
As the half went on, there were no threatening chances at goal for either team. The second stanza kicked off with Les Parisiens scoring the first goal of the match in the 57th minute. Blaise Matuidi and Ibrahimovic linked up well early in the move, before Lucas finished with a powerful low strike. In the 86th minute, Lucas helped in the creation of the second goal as he flicked on a long ball to the Swedish striker, who made no mistake with an emphatic finish.
An excellent combination by Lucas and Ibrahamovic facilitated a final score of 2-0 as the match came to an end. Shakhtar will play in the Europa League knockout stage after Real Madrid’s 8-0 triumph over Malmo.
