FC Porto enjoyed a 3-1 victory over Maccabi Tel Aviv on Wednesday night at Haifa, keeping the Yellows pointless, and without a win this season in the Uefa Champions League. The home team looked to score their first win this season, which would keep them in contention for a last-16 spot. However, the visiting men from Portugal were looking to remain at the top of Group G.
It did not take long for the Dragons to show why they are number one in this pool, as Cristian Tello slipped the ball passed Predrag Rajkovic in the 19th minute for the first goal. The following 20 minutes saw play slow down dramatically, with Julen Lopetegui’s men asserting their dominance with possession and territory. As the first 45 came to a close, the men from Israel defended well against the Blue-and-whites, keeping the score at 1-0 to the visitors.
The second stanza began with a Porto kick off, with the Portuguese club wasting no time as Andre Andre headed into the net in the 49th minute, upping the score to 2-0. The 72nd minute saw Miguel Layun changing the score to 3-0, after he found the right corner of the net. However, Eran Zahavi managed to put the Yellows on the scoreboard in the 74th minute, following a penalty, which put the score at 3-1.
Both teams attacked smartly, and defended hard in the remaining 20 minutes of the match, but none were able to find the back of the net once more. The final whistle blowing at 3-1 to the Blue-and-white, keeping them firmly at number one, and knocking Maccabi out of the competition.
