Porto Defeats Chelsea

English champions Chelsea lost 2-1 to FC Porto on Tuesday night at the Estadio Do Dragoa in the group stages of the  Uefa Champions League. Andre Andre and Maicon were on target for the home team, while Willian netted for the visitors. The Blues now drop to third place in Group G.

The Portuguese club welcomed former boss Jose Mourinho back to his old stomping ground, hoping for its first win of this European campaign. The atmosphere was electric as the teams entered the stadium and it looked as if another special night of Champions League action was on the cards. It was a high tempo start to the match and both goalkeepers were tested early on.

New Blues signing Pedro should have put them ahead in the 14th minute when he found himself one-on-one with Iker Casillas after good combination play by Diego Costa and Willian, but the Spaniard could not find the finish. Despite Costa leading the line well for the visitors in attack, they were looking very shaky in defence. Porto’s pace seemed to trouble Mourinho’s men and Vincent Aboubakar and Yacine Brahimi were proving to be a handful.

In the 39th minute, the deadlock was finally broken when Asmir Begovic parried Brahimi’s effort straight into the path of Andre who made no mistake with the finish. It looked as if the Dragons would be going into half-time with a 1-0 advantage, however, with the last kick of the half, Willian would equalise for the London club and the half would end level. The home team were looking the brighter of the two sides in the second stanza.

Ruben Nevez would come close for the hosts in the 48th minute, while Brazilian defender Maicon would put them ahead. Despite Porto dominating possession for long periods in the game, it was Chelsea who would come close in the 58th minute through Costa but the striker hit the crossbar. In the 90th minute Chelsea appealed for a penalty after it appeared that a Porto player had handled the ball, but they were lucky not to be further behidn moments earlier when Danilo’s header hit the crossbar.

The match ended 2-1 in favour of Porto who now move top of Group G while the Blues’ patchy start to the new season continues.
