Polokwane City Close To Redemption

Polokwane City jumped to first spot on the PSL relegation-promotion mini-league play-offs after beating Black Leopards 1-0 in a physical Limpopo Derby at the old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Tuesday.  Both teams enjoyed a fair share of the ball inside the opening minutes of the game without creating clear cut opportunities.  In the 19th minute Mumuni Abubakkar came close to opening the scoring with a shot from range after being offered some space by City’s defence.

Just minutes later, Abbas Amidu chipped the ball over the keeper for a goal but the flag had already gone up for offside.  At one point, the match seemed like Lidoda Duvha’s for the taking until the 29th minute when Vukile Mgqibisa connected with a timid free kick to give Rise and Shine a one goal advantage which they held on to for the remainder of the half, keeping at bay the forever attacking Leopards.

The opening moments of the second stanza saw the rejuvenated City taking the game to their visitors.  However Kosta Papic’s men rediscovered their rhythm and threw everything at the home side but Modiri Morumo remained unbeaten.  In the 86th minute Puleng Tlolane found himself unmarked behind the Leopards defence with no-one closing him down but they didn’t have to as he sent his shot wide of goal.

The match could have been won by more goals or perhaps end in a draw as it was that kind of a game, but no goals would come from any of the late attempts by either side.  Play-off action resumes on the weekend when Boebie Solomons’ side will lock horns with Milano united.
