Maritzburg United edged out Platinum Stars 2-1 at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in their Absa Priemership encounter on Sunday afternoon. The win has moved The Team of Choice into eighth on the log while Dikwena stay 13th place. United started the stronger of the two dictating the match from the first whistle.
In the 11th minute Ryan De Jong forced a cat-like reflex save from goalkeeper Kabelo Dambe who parried De Jong’s long range effort over the cross bar for a corner. The home team did not put up much of a fight in the first half – this led to the visiting team attacking with much ease. In the 28th minute Deolin Makoa turned a defender and hit the back of the net as the home side’s defence provided no covering for their keeper.
On the stroke of half-time Steve Komphela’s men missed an opportunity to double their lead as Mondli Cele’s shot went over the cross bar when it looked easier to score. The score stood at 1-0 for the away team at the break. The game looked set to end in a 1-0 affair until the dying minutes of the game when first Allan Freese’s men pulled one back through Ndumiso Mabena who turned the ball into the net at close range in the 87th minute. Then jJust two minutes later Kurt Lentjies made good work inside Stars’ box before he pulled the ball back for Mohau Mokate who made no mistake and his goal awarded Komphela’s men the 3 points.
