Platinum Stars will defend their Telkom Knockout crown against SuperSport United after seeing off Mamelodi Sundowns 1-0 in the semi-final at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Sunday. An early injury for Ndumiso Mabena saw him leaving the field. Teko Modise fired a shot from distance but his efforts went wide.
Robert Ng’ambi managed to scoop up the ball keeping it away from the defender, but as he fired the ball it fell straight in the arms of Denis Onyango. Hlompho Kekana managed to take a free kick for Sundowns but his shot went over the post. Another chance for the Brazilians to open the scoring fell to Cuthbert Malajila but the Zimbabwean headed over from close range.
Loluvowethu Mpeta got a yellow card for a bad foul on Elias Pelembe. A set piece from the visitors saw Modise take it well but it went over the head of Malajila. Khama Billiat got a yellow card for a bad foul thereafter.
He later missed a clear chance at goal that was wonderfully provided by Ramahlwe Mphahlele. Half-time arrived with no clear chances at goal with both teams yet to score. The second stanza started with the boys trying to get a point on the score board. A goal came in the 50th minute for Dikwena.
Eleazar Rodgers put the North West club in the lead. Tebogo Langerman was cautioned for a foul on Mabena. Ejike Uzoenyi came on for Lebohang Mokoena and Mame Niang replaced Pelembe as Pitso Mosimane desperately searched for an equaliser.
Downs would get their chance to level but Niang’s effort went over the cross bar from close range. Katlego Mashego replaced Billiat but this didn’t help as Sundowns failed to catch up. Stars progressed to the final by winning 1-0 in Phokeng.
