Platinum Stars overcome the University of Pretoria 2-0 to go top of the Absa Premiership table and win the Q1 at Tuks Stadium on Sunday. Both teams started the match attacking with the two goalkeepers being involved with the ball in the first five minutes but then laid back probably due to the hot weather conditions. AmaTuks received a corner kick in the eighth minute and Bouna Coundoul made a great save from Partson Jaure’s header but the whistle had already been blown signaling a goalkick after the out swinger from the corner had crossed the line.
The ball was played in the middle of the park most of the time with no team convincing to be in need of the three points. Thato Mosadi’s shot went inches off target in the 22nd minute leaving the ball to go out for a goalkick. Masibusani Zongo’s cross from the far side failed to connect with Dikwena’s strikers in the box leaving the ball to go out for a goalkick 28 minutes into the first half.
Zongo made some beautiful touches and was entertaining the crowd going into half-time. Ndumiso Mabena’s shot went wide early into the second half after a pass from Bonginkosi Ntuli. Tuks’ Bongani Nyathi showed some brilliant foot work and took a shot at goal but went wide in the 50th minute.
Ntuli connected with Mabena’s pass to give Dikwena the lead in what seemed to be a transition play in the 55th minute. Senegal captain Bouna made a great save denying Thabo Mnyamane a goal from a header in the 67th minute. Eleazar Rodgers failed to finish the match in the 71st minute hitting the cross bar after a quick one-two from Dikwena.
Letladi Madubanya netted in an insurance goal for Stars in the 73rd minute after yet another quick one-two in the Tuks box. Amatuks continued attacking but could not find any luck as Sammy Troughton’s troops went down on home turf.
