Platinum Stars beat Kaizer Chiefs 2-0 at the Royal Bafokeng stadium in their Absa Premiership encounter on Wednesday evening. Stars started the game on the front foot as they kept possession well but it was Chiefs who had the first chance when Camaldine Abraw had a free header at the back post but could not find the target on 14 minutes. This helped Amakhosi gain confidence and they should have taken the lead on 16 minutes when great work from Siphiwe Tshabalala saw him beat two players and drift into the box to square the ball to Lucky Baloyi who shot wide.
It was all Steve Komphela’s men but then Dikwena took the lead on 23 minutes after a classic counter attack. A long ball out from the back was flicked on into the path of Ndumiso Mabena who drove forward and hit a shot which deflected off Eric Mathoho into the top corner of Itumeleng Khune’s goal. Komphela’s side started the second half well and almost drew level but were denied by Mbongeni Mzimela who came off his line well to smother the attack.
Cavin Johnson’s troops almost doubled their lead but Masibusane Zongo’s glancing header was tipped over by Khune. The Glamour Boys were not in full flow and on 77 minutes went 2-0 down when a tight penalty decision was given against the visitors as the ball struck Bernard Parker’s arm from close range. Mabena made no mistake from the spot as he stepped up and with a cheeky chip down the middle of the goal beat Khune.
The defending league champions fall further behind the log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns as it looks less likely that they will defend their title.
