Orlando Pirates defeated Polokwane City 3-1 on Saturday evening in an Absa Premiership match at Orlando Stadium. First half goals by Mpho Makola, Kermit Erasmus and Oupa Manyisa gave the Buccaneers the three points and managed to close the gap between them and log leaders Kaizer Chiefs to 12 points. Now Pirates are fourth on with 35 points.
During the first minute, Polokwane showed what their intentions were as they attacked Pirates with Cole Alexander’s shot going wide. Seconds later, the Sea Robbers retaliated and found the back of the net when Makola scored from Thabo Matlaba’s cross. The visitors continued to put Pirates under pressure as they probed for an equaliser but they couldn’t penetrate the home defence. 10 minutes before the break, the Bucs regained possession and found their way through to City’s half when Brighton Mhlongo delivered a long pass to find Erasmus who scored with a right foot over the oncoming Modiri Marumo.
The hosts were awarded a penalty In the 40th minute after Matlaba was challenged by Bhekithemba Mema unfairly. The penalty was converted by Manyisa to give the Bucks a 3-0 lead. After the first half the visitors came back with a strong attack.
A cross from the left by Jabu Maluleke found Tshepo Tema’s header who scored a consolation goal for Rise and Shine. Polokwane had a number of chances but they couldn’t convert them. Kosta Papic’s side are in sixth position.
