Orlando Pirates won 1-0 against Moroka Swallows in the original Soweto Derby at Orlando Stadium on Saturday evening to go fourth on the Absa Premiership log. Vladimir Vermezovic’s troops dictated matters from the first whistle. The Dube Birds looked shaky at the back and were punished early in the match.
Mpho Makola dished a superb long range pass to find Thabo Matlaba and the speedy left back skinned his man to unleash a curler which was finger-tip saved by Greg Etafia to set up Tlou Segolela whose header from close range gave the Buccaneers a 1-0 lead just 12 minutes into the match. The Birds had a handful of chances to level matters but Senzo Meyiwa was always alert to the danger.
The Sea Robbers looked the more lively of the two sides inside the opening half as they held on to their thin lead heading to the break. Matlaba almost doubled the advantage for the home side five minutes into the second stanza but his shot was well over the bar. Zeca Marques had the pleasure of seeing his side dictating proceedings before the hour mark, however their poor play in front of goal left much to be desired.
Matlaba again had a chance to put a nail in the coffin in the closing moments after being setup by substitute Kermit Erasmus, however his shot was way off target. Pirates held on to their early lead to win the match 1-0 and continue their climb up the league table.
