Orlando Pirates has defeated the University of Pretoria 2-0 in their Absa Premiership clash at Orlando Stadium on Wednesday. Goals were scored by Thabo Matlaba and Sifiso Myeni in the second half. Goalkeeper Brighton Mhlongo kept AmaTuks at bay with tremendous saves.
This was Mhlongo’s game since last year January and it looks like he was making up for lost time making a string of good saves. The first half could have ended with Tuks leading had it not been for Mhlongo. Pirates on the other hand were not performing.
The home team came back all guns blazing and left nothing to chance. With an assistance from Kermit Erasmus, Matlaba kicked off the scoring with a perfect left-footed shot at the near post straight into the net. The goal brought out the best from Eric Tinkler’s troops.
Their tactics improved and more opportunities were created. However, they again failed to materialise until the 83rd minute when Sammy Troughton’s team gave in. Buccaneers substitute Thabo Qangile made an impact, running down the left flank and slotting a dangerous cross that the visitors defence failed to clear after a few deflections.
Myeni was at the right place at the right time and seized the opportunity. He slotted in an excellent second goal, further strengthening the lead and sealing the points. As the Soweto giants celebrate their win, the capital club draws closer towards relegation.
