Orlando Pirates destroyed Jomo Cosmos with a sensational 5-0 win in the Absa Premiership at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday evening. The victory for the Buccaneers is by far the largest margin that they have ever achieved against Cosmos. Pirates applied a lot of pressure against their opponents and took the lead early when Ayanda Gcaba scored in the tenth minute from a tight angle.
Things did not look up for Ezenkosi as Cheslyn Jampies saw red three minutes later for a dangerous studs-up challenge. It only went from bad to worse after that. The Sea Robbers maintained the pressure and scored goal number two when Sifiso Myeni’s powerful header assisted by Luvuyo Memela’s free kick went past Sherwin Naicker.
The Ghost did not stop their riot and went on to score a third when the visitors’ defence was caught napping and Mpho Makola netted from distance into the bottom right corner of the net. It was just one-way traffic and Jomo Sono’s side was struggling to recover from losing Jampies. Tendai Ndoro scored yet another goal for Eric Tinkler’s troops from close range after receiving a square pass from Happy Jele as the first half ended with the hosts four goals ahead against 10-man Cosmos.
It was clear in the second half that Sono gave his team a talking to during the break because they started off looking a lot more composed. They were defending better, and managed to keep from conceding yet another goal. Naicker was making plenty of saves to prevent the score line from growing any bigger than it already was, throwing himself at everything and making plenty of punches away whenever Tinkler’s team was awarded a corner.
The Soweto giantss finished off their wonderful display of football when Gift Motupa scored in the 90th minute with a calm and composed goal which closed off the match in magnificent fashion.
