Pakistan dominated Day One of the first Test against New Zealand on Sunday in Abu Dhabi to close on 269/1. The hosts won the toss and the openers fully justified Misbah-ul-Haq’s choice as Mohammad Hafeez and Ahmed Shehzad piled on a massive 178-run first wicket stand.
Hafeez hit ten fours before falling four agonising runs short of his ton when he was caught and bowled by Corey Anderson (1/31) shortly before tea. After the second interval Shehzad reached his century and would close on 126 not out. Azhar Ali was the other man at the crease and will resume on Monday morning unbeaten on 46.
