Orlando Pirates beat Chippa United 2-0 in their Absa Premiership encounter on Tuesday night at the Orlando Stadium. Pirates, who have now gone 10 games unbeaten in all competitions, piled pressure on Chippa from the first whistle. This was evident when in just the sixth minute the Buccaneers where 1-0 up.
Some poor defending on the part of the Chilli Boys granted Sifiso Myeni on the right wing the ball. Myeni sent the ball into the box which landed onto the path of Mpho Makola who headed the ball home. Three minutes later Mbongiseni Mzimela was called into action once again when Eric Tinkler’s men went on the attack. Captain Oupa Manyisa struck the ball with power but Mzimela was more than ready to parry the threat away.
In the 11th minute Chippa took their first swipe at Brighton Mhlongo when a shot on target was managed. Mhlongo came off his line to defend the corner and was too close to block the header from causing any damage. In the 28th minute Myeni doubled Pirates’ lead after some more poor defending from Ernst Middendrop’s men. Tandani Ntshumayelo took the opportunity presented to him on the right hand side and played a low cross which found Myeni unmarked.
Myeni was up to the task sending Pirates 2-0 up into half-time. In the second stanza the Sea Robbers came out guns blazing with Ntshumayelo being central to every defence and attack that they staged. Even though it didn’t result in any goals, the crowd was very much entertained as Tinkler’s men pressed forward with some neat passing and some odd show boating. With this 2-0 win, Pirates moved second on the log with 40 points from 23 games while Chippa remains 11th with 24 points from 22 games.
