Orlando Pirates edged Kaizer Chiefs in a tense penalty shootout on Saturday to lift the preseason Carling Black Label Cup. After 90 minutes the match between the two Soweto Giants ended in a goalless draw and penalties were needed. In the first ten minutes Chiefs had some early chances but they didn’t convert them.
Oupa Manyisa had a shot at goal but his shot went wide as the match went to the 20 minute-mark with the score still 0-0 with both teams trying to create chances. Kingston Nkhatha was substituted after having a knock and was replaced by Siphelele Mthembu. After thirty minutes both sides were still deadlocked.
In the 37th minute Pirates were awarded a free kick. Daine Klate delivered a cross headed by Happy Jele over the cross bar. Amakhosi were starting to defend deep, as the Buccaneers continued to threaten as the match went to half-time 0-0. In the second half both teams were looking to improve their game.
In the 48th minute Willard Katsande pulled a powerful shot using his left foot and Senzo Meyiwa made a good save. In the 53rd minute both teams made changes; Josta Dladla came in for Katlego Mphela and Tlou Segolela was off for the Bucs. Jele was also substituted after holding his chest as he was not breathing properly. Ntsikelelo Nyawuza replaced him.
In the 64th minute the Glamour Boys were awarded a penalty after Rooi Mahamutsa’s late tackle on George Lebese. George Maluleka had a chance to put Chiefs in front but missed the penalty. Stuart Baxter’s side were defending deeply, as they were looking to hit Pirates on the counter attack but after 90 minutes it was scoreless.
Pirates would win the shootout 6-5 with Thabo Matlaba hitting the winning spot kick.
