Goals from Daine Klate and Kermit Erasmus saw Orlando Pirates defeat SuperSport United 2-1 to advance to the semi-finals of the MTN8 on Saturday. After a cagey first 30 minutes it was the Buccaneers who broke the deadlock as an unmarked Klate latched on to a cross from Thabo Matlaba to put one past young Ronwen Williams. Matsatsantsa tried to get behind the Pirates defence but had no luck and were punished for poor defending.
The Bucs doubled their lead before half-time as Erasmus beat the offside trap to chip the ball over Williams as they went into the break with a 2-0 lead. In the second half the Sea Robbers continued where they left off putting pressure on the SuperSport defence. Matlaba had a chance to get a third for the hosts but hit the post.
However United showed some improvement and got one back when David Mathebula put one past Senzo Meyiwa. The improved second half performance from Cavin Johnson’s men saw them creating more attacking chances. Vladimir Vermmezovic’s charges had a chance to put this game to bed with 20 minutes to go through Mpho Makola and Oupa Manyisa but both men were not able to convert their chances as they ran out 2-1 winners to advance into the final four of the MTN8.
The man of the match award went to Thandani Ntshumayelo. The draw for the semi-finals will take place on Monday.
