Orlando Pirates defeated Polokwane City 2-1 in the Telkom Knockout on Sunday afternoon at the Orlando Stadium. Pirates progressed to the next round following this hard-fought win. Sifiso Myeni was fouled just three minutes into the game.
Joseph Musonda was given a yellow card for a foul on Thabo Qalinge in the 12th minute. Tokelo Langa opened the scoring with a deflected long range shot which put Polokwane in the lead. City’s happiness was short lived as Issa Sarr’s header ended up as an equaliser.
Lehlohonolo Majoro fell in the box hoping to get a penalty but the referee waved for play to continue. Come half-time the teams were deadlocked at 1-1. The second half started with both teams fighting to regain the lead.
A substitution was made by Vladimir Vermezovic as Daine Klate came on for Myeni. Mpho Makola’s attempt for goal number two went over the post. Klate was shown a yellow card in the 60th minute.
Kosta Papic brought on Raymond Monama for Roger Majafa. Qalinge finally ended the parity when he scored the second goal for the Buccaneers. Senzo Meyiwa denied Jabulani Maluleke the equaliser in the 74th minute.
Thandani Ntshumayelo replaced Makola in the 77th minute. A yellow card was given to Cole Alexander for a foul on Nyauza. A last minute change for Bucs saw Bereza Masiki coming on for Qalinge.
The match finally ended with Vermezovic’s men progressing to the quarter-finals.
