The original Soweto derby match between Moroka Swallows and Orlando Pirates at Dobsonville Stadium ended 1-1 on Wednesday night in the Absa Premiership. The Dube Birds were desperate for maximum points against Pirates but it was the visitors who showed more intent as they were looking to make it two out of two. In the 11th minute Kermit Erasmus took an early chance at goal and missed to the left of the goal.
Both teams were not creating clear cut chances as the match reached the 20th minute still 0-0. The hosts started to push forward as they almost scored in the 26th minute but a header at goal by Rudi Isaacs went over the bar. In the 34th minute Siyabonga Nomvethe scored a vital goal for his side to go 1-0 up just before half-time.
In the second half the Sea Robbers were looking to bounce back after a poor first half and looking to reduce the deficit against a well-organised Swallows defence. The Buccaneers were starting to push more men forward as they were still
behind, but Fani Madida’s men stood firm. In the 76th minute the visitors finally broke the home resistance as Lehlohonolo Majoro levelled for his side.
Pirates almost scored the second goal in the 81st minute but Erasmus’ cross was poor. In the 85th minute Eric Tinkler’s side were awarded a free kick, and Rooi Mahamutsa missed a glorious chance as his shot went across the goal posts. The visitors kept pushing but it was in vain as the two sides shared the spoils.
