A game full of fireworks saw Mamelodi Sundowns thrash Orlando Pirates 3-0 at Loftus Versfeld in the Absa Premiership on Wednesday. This action-filled match saw Pirates win their first league game for the season. After just 15 minutes of play Kermit Erasmus found the back of the net.
This put the Bucs at an early advantage. A good clearance from Ramahlwe Mphahlele nearly saw Erasmus bag his brace. Masandawana got a great opportunity when Hlompho Kekana fired a powerful shot but bashed the post instead. The 29th minute saw the goal post in Sundowns’ way again when Surprise Moriri’s shot hit the crossbar.
Both sides were hitting the woodwork as they kept misfiring shots. The 36th minute saw Erasmus receive a yellow card for diving. The Sea Robbers might have been in the lead but Downs kept on piling on the pressure.
A scramble for the ball from a set piece almost saw Sundowns net their first goal of the game. A pulsating 45 minutes full of excitement ended 1-0 to the visitors. As the second half began Pitso Mosimane’s men gained momentum.
However on 63 minutes Erasmus netted his brace and Vladimir Vermezovic’s men were on top in the capital. Mpho Makola came on for Daine Klate and shortly thereafter Erasmus made way for Lehlohonolo Majoro. With great chances created, great passes and shots fired the pace of the game intensified.
Majoro banged in goal number three as he found a gap in the home defence in the 75th minute. As much as the hosts created a lot of chances they still could not find the back of the net. Happy Jele was shown a yellow card in the 85th minute for time wasting.
Thabo Matlaba ended the game on a low as he was given a red card for a bad foul. After a win against Moroka Swallows last week, it is back to the drawing board for the defending champions as they were thrashed in this encounter. Pirates are up and running after bagging the three points and their first league win for the season
