Novak Djokovic will play Andy Murray in Sunday’s Australian Open final after the Serb ousted defending champion Stanislas Wawrinka in five sets in Friday’s semi-final in Melbourne. Djokovic landed the first set 7-6 before the Swiss struck back 6-3 in the second. The Serb took a two sets to one advantage after taking the third 6-4.
However the see-saw nature of this final four encounter at the Rod Laver Arena continued as the fifth seed won the fourth set 6-4. However any dreams of an epic, titanic struggle for glory were dashed in 36 short minutes as the world number one destroyed his opponent 6-0 to book his place in the final. Djokovic served just five aces compared to Wawrinka’s ten.
The Swiss also hit 42 winners versus 27 from the Serb. But perhaps the telling difference between these two magnificent tennis players was the 69 unforced errors committed by the 2014 champions. The four-times Aussie Open winner was guilty on just 49 occasions.
