Neil McKenzie, Quinton De Kock And Aaron Phangiso Boost For Highveld Lions

The Highveld Lions have been boosted by the return of Neil McKenzie and the availability of Quinton De Kock for their Momentum One-day Cup opener against the Warriors in Potchefstroom on Sunday.  McKenzie missed the Lions’ two Sunfoil Series games due to his Champions League T20 commitments, but will begin his 20th season of List A cricket on Sunday, having made his debut in the format during the 1995/96 season.  Meanwhile De Kock and Aaron Phangiso are two of just a handful of Proteas players that have been made available for this weekend’s fixtures ahead of their trip to New Zealand next week.

The pair’s presence was welcomed by coach, Geoff Toyana, who must do without Alviro Petersen, Eddie Leie and Chris Morris because of injury.  “These are three quality players but I know that all players have been training hard and this is another opportunity for the depth of our team to gain experience and be tested,” said Toyana.  Jean Symes’ outing for Gauteng last Sunday has confirmed his recovery from a hand injury, but one of the bowlers he came up against in that match remains out of action for the Chevrolet Warriors.

Rusty Theron scored 26 and took 3 for 22 in a handsome victory for Eastern Province in that game, but there was bad news for Warriors coach, Piet Botha.  “Rusty aggravated his knee problem against the Strikers, so he remains unavailable for the time being.  Unfortunately another one of our stronger one-day players, Davey Jacobs, is also out for some time,” said Botha.  The Warriors squad is, therefore, similar to the one that featured in their last Sunfoil Series outing, with one-day specialists, Lundi Mbane and Christiaan Jonker, the notable additions.

The Warriors will wear a limited edition pink kit in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  The match starts at 10am, with gates opening at 9am, and will be shown live on SuperSport. Tickets cost R50 for adults and R40 for children and will be available at the gate.
