Bongani Ndulula bagged a brace as AmaZulu beat Maritzburg United 3-1 at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday night in an entertaining KZN derby. Steve Komphela was hoping his troops would continue on their newly-found form since he took over against an AmaZulu side that four matches without a win, including three straight losses in the Absa Premiership matches.
The visitors saw too much of the ball in the opening half while the home side was chasing shadows. Lost in the joy of bullying The Team of Choice, Craig Roslee’s men conceded a penalty in the 45th minute when Marc Van Herdeen fouled Kurt Lentjies in the box and the former Sundowns player retaliated by slotting the ball past Philani Zikalala to seal a 1-0 lead for his side heading into the break.
It took five minutes into the second stanza for Usuthu to find an equaliser. Namibian Larry Horaeb danced past the Maritzburg defence to set up Goodman Dlamini and he deflected the ball into the net. AmaZulu took the lead for the first time in the match through Bongani Ndulula in the 70th minute. Dlamini made a great run on the right wing to set up Ndulula whose tap in got the better of Shuaib Walters. Ndulula completed his brace in the 76th minute when he isolated and skinned his man to unleash a low shot which was nowhere near Walters’s reach. The team of Choice tried to claw their way back into the match but it wasn’t to be. Usuthu earned three vital points to boost their quest to finish within the top eight. 3-1 was the final score in favour of AmaZulu.
