Martizburg United won their first match of the Absa Premiership season against University of Pretoria 1-0 at Tuks Sport Stadium in Pretoria on Sunday. Maritzburg had undergone eight successive defeats until finally picking up three points in the league. This clash was a crucial one as AmaTuks came into the match second-last on the log with their opposition being the very last at 16th.
The points were needed for both clubs as the pressure to pick up points mounted. Evans Rusike scored his first goal in the league in stunning fashion, a goal from outside the penalty area into the left-hand corner of the net after 13 minutes of play. Sammy Troughton’s troops took many shots at goal but none of them were converted and they looked the more promising to score in the second half but failed to score, leaving the score line at 1-0 after the first half.
The second stanza was no different as the home team continued to attack but were denied by Maritzburg goalkeeper Tawfeeq Salie who made two crucial saves towards the end of the match to keep a clean sheet. Troughton’s team is now only one point clear above the Team of Choice in the league standings.
