A struggling Maritzburg United side managed to pick up all three points in the Absa Premiership after beating Golden Arrows 2-0 at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday evening. Maritzburg have only managed 12 points in 20 games this season and are fighting relegation. They brought their A-game and did all they could to take maximum points.
They were clearly the better side and were playing a very clever style of counter attacking football with fluid passing. Arrows had their fair share of chances in the first half but United defended well and kept possession. No goals were scored in the first half but it was very clear that the Team of Choice meant business.
In the second half, the 58th minute to be exact, Kurt Leintjies beat goalkeeper Maximilian Mbaeva from close range when he parried away a shot but it landed right at Leintjie’s feet. The hosts continued to challenge their opponents in the difficult raining conditions and doubled their lead 15 minutes later through Mohammed Anas who scored from far out; a shot that went into the bottom right corner of the net. Unfortunately Anas injured himself in the process and had to be stretchered off the pitch.
Ernst Middendorp’s boys have managed to break their somewhat bad run of luck against Abafan Bes’thende, winning at home for the first time this season, but still have a lot more work to do if they want to avoid relegation.
