A solitary goal from Kurt Lentjies helped Maritzburg United earn a 1-0 win over Bloemfontein Celtic at the Kaizer Sebothelo Stadium in the Absa Premiership on Sunday. The visitors opened the scoring through Lentjies after Deolin Mekoa whipped in a free-kick which evaded the Celtic defence to find Lentjies, who had made a brilliant run to the far post to stab it in to give his team the ninth minute lead. Siwelele went in search of an equaliser and came close through half-chances for Keegan Ritchie and Alfred Ndegane, but neither could find the back of the net.
It remained 1-0 at half-time as the hosts found it difficult to break through Maritzburg’s resolute defence. There was an early chance in the second half for Phunya Sele Sele to net the leveler as the ball fell to Gabadinho Mhango but his shot was collected by Virgil Vries. Maritzburg seemed content with defending deep and hitting the hosts on the counterattack, with Steve Komphela’s men coming close to finding a second goal as they hit Celtic on the counter but Lentjies’ close range shot went over the bar.
Clinton Larsen’s men stepped up the pressure yet still couldn’t trouble Vries’ goal as Musa Nyatama’s long-range effort in the 65th minute went over the bar. The Team of Choice could have wrapped up the points in the dying minutes but Lentjies’ shot couldn’t beat Patrick Tignyemb as the match ended 1-0.
