Maritzburg United, The Team Of Choice

Maritzburg United are named after the KwaZulu-Natal capital in which they are situated, Pietermaritzburg, and currently play in the Absa Premiership.  The football team was formed in 1979 and is currently owned by Farook Kadodia.  Former Bafana Bafana captain, Steve Komphela is head coach and following his appointment last season has already proven to be good value as the team has progressed.

The 47-year old previously coached at Free State Stars and Platinum Stars before moving to The Team of Choice.  United have not always been in the top flight.  As recently as 2007/08, they were the winners of the First Division Coastal Stream.  The club play their home games at Harry Gwala Stadium.

Maritzburg United have signed 23-year old right back Abel Mabaso, the vastly experienced Ghana international John Paintsil and Zimbabwean left back Khumbulani Banda ahead of the 2014/15 season.
