Maritzburg United spoiled the party for Mamelodi Sundowns when Mohammed Awal scored a penalty to equalise 1-1 in the opening match of the 2014/15 Absa Premiership season at Loftus Stadium on Friday night. Katlego Mashego scored an early goal after Mame Niang assisted and put the Brazilians in the lead less than two minutes after the game started. Alje Schut came close to doubling the lead in the 12th minute but he failed to hit the target.
The Team of Choice had difficulties to pass through the defence of the hosts in the first half. Instead of registering his name on the score board Sheldon Van Wyk became the first player in the referee’s book for a foul on Teko Modise. Niang had a chance to double the lead in the 40th minute but his shot was narrowly wide.
Steve Komphela’s boys came out showing strong form in the second half controlling possession of the ball but nothing came through for them. Wayne Sandilands denied Mohau Mokate a chance to equalise in the 80th minute but a foul on Mondli Cele in the box gave Maritzburg a penalty on 90 minutes and Awal hit the target to nick a point away from home.
