Maritzburg United ran the show to book a Last 16 spot in the Nedbank Cup thanks to a 3-1 win over Black Leopard at Harry Gwala Stadium on Wednesday. United may be struggling in the Absa Premiership, but they produced a great performance and outclassed the National First Division side in all aspects. Captain Kurt Lentjies handed the home side a perfect start with a stunning finish, although visitors levelled matters after five minutes through Peter Nyundu’s strike.
The pace of the game stifled from there and that resulted in both teams locked at 1-1 going into half-time. The Team of Choice approached the second half like the more senior side, keeping ball possession leaving their opponents to chase shadows. In the 65th minute, Bandile Shandu restored the lead for the home side as he scored his first goal in Maritzburg colours.
Evans Rusike was brought down and Lentjies stepped up calmly to convert from the spot to send Ernst Middendorp’s men to the next round of the Nedbank Cup. Next up for the KwaZulu-Natal club will be a provincial derby against Golden Arrows and Middendorp will hope that this win will give his side some momentum as they fight to preserve their league status.
