Maritzburg United beat Jomo Cosmos 2-1 to advance to the quarter-finals of the Telkom Knockout at the Harry Gwala Stadium in Pitermaritzburg on Friday. Cosmos seemed to start the first half adequately with decent play and created opportunities. However it was the Team of Choice that made a lovely breakthrough 12 minutes into the game but goalkeeper Sherwyn Naicker was able to read it well and make the save.
After many attempted efforts by Maritzburg, just on the stroke of the half-time whistle. Siyabulela Shai scored a long range effort after he moved passed Ezenkosi’s midfield and defence. Jomo Sono would have been unhappy goign into the break 1-0 down but his unhappiness turned to anger as the visitors found themselves a man down after Thato Sithole was shown a red card for his harsh late challenge on Shai.
In the second half United looked even more confident in the opening minutes of the half. Things worsened for Sono’s side when the hosts were awarded a penalty in the 54th minute. Kurt Lentjies took the penalty with ease to double the score. Towards the end of the second half, Fadlu Davids’ men looked relaxed and the away side took advantage in the 75th minute when Cheslyn Jampies scored a delicate free kick but Jomo Cosmos was unable to do any further damage.
This win is the first for the KwaZulu-Natal club this season while Cosmos are still yet to win.
