Maritzburg United secured a much needed win beating Bloemfontein Celtic by a goal to nil in the Absa Premiership at Petros Molemela Stadium on Sunday. Celtic nearly opened the scoring after seven minutes when Lerato Lamola cut the ball back for Lyle Lakay, who fired straight at Glen Verbauwhede from 12 yards out. The home side had another chance three minutes later, as Thapelo Morena showed great pace to get to the byline, before picking out Fiston Abdul Razak, who forced Verbauwhede into a fine save.
Maritzburg should have gone ahead in the 18th minute, as Philani Zulu broke through on goal but ended up dragging his effort inches wide of the upright. That proved to be the last bit of goalmouth action in the opening 45 minutes, despite it being a lively encounter. Phunya Sele Sele got off to a better start in the second stanza and should have taken the lead in the 49th minute but Musa Nyatama blazed over from 12-yards out.
After a quiet spell in the half, the Team of Choice broke the deadlock in the 73rd minute, as Pagiso Sanoka rose well to head home Kurt Lentjies’ free-kick. Serame Letsoaka’s lads pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages, but they struggled with the final ball and ultimately lost 1-0.
