Canadian seventh seed Eugenie Bouchard progressed to the Australian Open third round after a 6-0, 6-3 demolition of Kiki Bertens. Bouchard blazed past the Dutchwoman in just 54 minutes at the Margaret Court Arena. Earlier, Maria Sharapova came back from the brink of a shock second round exit to defeat to fellow Russian Alexandra Panova 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 on Wednesday.
The second seed was 4-1, 40-15 down in the third but rallied back to secure a third round berth. Sharapova needed one minute shy of two-and-a-half hours, including a gruelling 69 minute third set, to see off Panova at the Rod Laver Arena. Earlier Ekaterina Makarova ousted Roberta Vinci 6-2, 6-4. The Russian hit 21 winners compared to 15 to book her place in the third round in Melbourne.
