Second seed Maria Sharapova wasted no time in thrashing Shuai Peng 6-4, 6-0 to book her place in the Australian Open quarter-finals in Melbourne on Sunday. The Russian required 75 minutes and committed only 15 unforced errors at the Rod Laver Arena. In the last eight, Sharapova will face Eugenie Bouchard.
The Canadian needed three sets to oust Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania. After racing to a 6-1 first set win, it was the Romanian who hit back with a 7-5 second set victory. Bouchard showed her class in the decider, taking it 6-2 to complete a tough two hours and six minutes workout on court.
Tenth seed Ekaterina Makarova is also through after seeing off Julia Goerges of Germany. The Russian wrapped upa 6-3, 6-2 victory in 69 minutes at the Margaret Court Arena. Makarova will meet Simona Halep next.
The Romanian ousted Yanina Wickmayer 6-4, 6-2 in a 79-minute workout on Rod Laver. Halep committed 13 unforced errors compared to the Belgian’s 24. South Africa’s Katie Poluta was a junior doubles winner on Court 22.
Poluta and Indonesia’s Deria Nur Haliza defeated France’s Fiona Ferro and Olivia Hauger of the United States 6-3, 7-6.
