Manchester United’s Fourth Straight Win

Goals from Marouane Fellaini and Juan Mata helped Manchester United to a 2-1 victory over Stoke City in their English Premier League encounter at Old Trafford on Tuesday.  The home side had the best of the opening exchanges and looked to put their opponents under pressure.  They  had a great chance to take the lead early on when Asmir Begovic gifted Robin Van Persie the ball at the edge of the penalty area and the Dutchman opted to pass to Ander Herrera who only managed to send his shot over the crossbar.
They did however go on to convert their next chance when Fellaini met a Herrera cross at the far post and buried his header past the Potters shot stopper to record his first goal at Old Trafford.  The visitors did not have many chances to speak of and were being bossed by their hosts however a lapse in concentration from United saw Steven Nzonzi fire one in from long range to level the score at 1-1 going into the half-time break.
Louis Van Gaal’s men looked to extend their lead in the second half as they came out looking for a goal.  They put pressure on the Potters’ defence and eventually they found their goal when Juan Mata whipped in a free-kick from distance to hand Van Gaal’s side the lead.  From that point onwards the Red Devils looked firmly in control and looked positive on attack with James Wilson and Fellaini coming close but not close enough.
Their opponents however were not able to string together any decent goal scoring opportunities as their final ball let them down.  However there was a last gasp attempt in added time for Mark Hughes’ charges when a Bojan Krkic cross found Mame Biram Diouf at the far post but the striker was brilliantly denied by David De Gea as the hosts ran out 2-1 victors.
