A goal each from Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata and Robin Van Persie saw Manchester United record an emphatic 3-0 victory over bitter rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday in the English Premier League. After two early attempts from the visitors at the other end the home side opened the scoring in the twelfth minute when skipper Rooney fired one past Brad Jones to hand his side the lead. They went on to double the lead minutes before half-time when Mata headed home a cross from Ashley Young despite looking like he was in an offside position but the goal stood.
The visitors had a decent attempt of their own when Raheem Sterling pulled away from his man and had a go at a header but once again he was denied by some brilliant goalkeeping from David De Gea. In the second half the Reds had more chances but were not clinical. Mario Balotelli was introduced and had the chance to make an immediate impact when he swung one in towards goal but his shot hit the crossbar to deny his side a way back.
Four minutes later things looked even worse for the Merseysiders as the Old Trafford faithful were treated once more to some good play as Van Persie got in on the act and stroked a Mata pass into the back of the net. With the end drawing near Balotelli and Sterling had some good chances from close range but were not able to convert them; coupled with some great saves from the Man of the Match David De Gea. Louis Van Gaal’s Red Devils ran out 3-0 winners.
