Manchester United powered to a 3-1 FA Cup Fifth Round win against Preston North End at Deepdale on Monday. The League One side had a chance early on from a set piece when Daley Blind and Kevin Davies were involved in a tangle, however they were not able to find a way through as Marouane Fellaini got to the ball first. United on the other hand had very few chances to speak of early in the half despite having a large amount of the possession.
In the 16th minute they were awarded a free kick in a dangerous area and Angel Di Maria stepped up and curled the ball towards the bottom right corner but was only able to watch his shot go wide of the posts. Both teams continued to search for a way through with the visitors having come closest to taking the lead when a Di Maria free kick found Radamel Falcao but the Colombian was not able to react fast enough to bury that chance as the half ended all square.
In the second half the hosts opened the scoring through Scott Laird who charged in to the Red Devils penalty area and beat David De Gea with a strong strike. The visiting side was not going to give up and were on the attack immediately with the bulk of the possession. They were rewarded for their persistence just after the hour mark when Ander Herrera found an Antonio Valencia pass in the box and slotted it past Thorsten Stuckmann to level matters at Deepdale.
The Premier League side were in the lead twelve minutes later when Fellaini scored from the rebound of his in header. Eleven minutes later they further extended their lead when Wayne Rooney was brought down in the penalty area by the Preston keeper and Rooney subsequently converted his penalty. With a minute to go the hosts were awarded a corner but it was a little too late as they were knocked out by Louis Van Gaal’s side, who will now take on fellow Premier League outfit Arsenal in the quarter-finals.
