Manchester City has really showed that they are not just another club from Manchester as it used to be the case in days of yore. They have grown to show they are the new champions in town and have the English Premier League trophy to prove it. The Citizens have won the league four times in their history, including two of the last three titles.
In order to cement their position as the top club in England, Manuel Pellegrini signed Fernando from FC Porto, Willy Caballero, Arsenal’s Bacary Sagna as well as Frank Lampard on a loan deal from sister club New York City. This transfer period saw more players being sold than being bought at City as the likes of Jack Rodwell, Gareth Barry and Costel Pantilimon were sold while the likes of Joleon Lescott, Alex Henshall, Ellis Plummer and three others have been released. The Blues are no strangers to winning trophies however a lengthy absence on the podium saw them crumbling into being just a sleeping giant.
However new billionaire owners brought in world class talent and infrastructure since 2008 and now it appears it is time to reap the rewards. As defending champions a lot will be expected from the men in blue but this season could really be a test of character as their rivals Manchester United are looking sharp before the start of the campaign. Other rivals such as Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal will also be looking to gain on the champions.
City will kick off their campaign with an away encounter against Newcastle United on the 17th of August.
