Arsenal and the struggling Manchester United played out a goalless draw, after a frantic encounter at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night.
Arsene Wenger’s side remains behind Chelsea in second place after a rather uptight encounter with United in which neither of the sides truly dominated the match..
Robin van Persie was afforded a superb opportunity to open the scoring early in the opening minutes of the match but pierced the ball straight at Wojciech Szczesny, which was the only chance of a dreary first half.
When both sides came back to the field for a restart, the hosts displayed more intensity, with Patrice Evra forced to clear a great header by Laurent Koscielny off the line.
Szczesny was called into action again to make a stunning save to deny Van Persie for a second time in the game, tipping the Dutchman’s point-black header onto the crossbar, before David De Gea equalled his counterpart with a diving save to put a stop to Santi Cazorla’s attempt to score late on.
The Gunners missed the opportunity to climb to the top spot of the English Premier League, meanwhile United are now 11 points behind Liverpool who are in the hunt for a Champions League spot after their 3-2 win at Fulham on the night.
