Manchester United progressed to the fifth round of the FA Cup with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Derby County at the iPro Stadium on Friday. The visitors dominated the bulk of play with 67% of the possession along with six attempts of which two were on target. They were rewarded for their dominance with an early strike in the 16th minute from Wayne Rooney that was thumped into the top corner.
The hosts did draw level in the latter stages of the game through George Thorne who poked one past David De Gea as the half came to an end with the score level at 1-1. In the second stanza it was once again the travelling side that opened the scoring as Daley Blind found himself in the box and converted a Jesse Lingard cross in the 65th minute to double his side’s lead. The Rams did have some opportunities to catch their Premier League opponents on the counter and even had a penalty appeal that was turned down by the referee however they were unable to capitalise on their chances.
The final blow came seven minutes from time when Juan Mata placed an Anthony Martial cross into the bottom corner to seal a 3-1 victory for the Old Trafford outfit as they progress to the fifth round.
