South Africa’s Lucas Sithole was a round robin US Open men’s Wheelchair Quad singles winner on Thursday after seeing off rival David Wagner in three tough sets at Flushing Meadows in New York. Sithole won the match 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 in a repeat of last year’s final in the Big Apple. The South African served two aces to none on his way to victory.
Although the American got 71% of his first serves in, he only won 56% of first serve points to 60% of Sithole and 36% of second serve points to Sithole’s 43% Even though the South African committed 14 unforced errors to the American’s two, it is Lucas Sithole who triumphed as he looks to defend his crown from last year.
However it was not such a good day for Kgothatso Montjane who was a Wheelchair women’s singles quarter-final victim to Aniek Van Koot of the Netherlands. The South African fell 6-2, 6-0 as she won just 40% of first serve points compared to the Dutchwoman’s 70% and 30% of second serve points to 53%
