Liverpool Too Strong For Newcastle

Liverpool hopes it can still qualify to play in the Uefa Champions League football next season after a 2-0 English Premier League home win on Monday night over Newcastle United who finished with 10 men.  The hosts’ goals were scored by Raheem Sterling and Joe Allen.  The Reds recovered from two league defeats to close the gap on fourth-placed Manchester City to four points with six games left.

Sterling’s finish put the home side ahead after nine minutes and Allen scored the second goal in the 70th minute.  Magpies player Moussa Sissoko was dismissed late on for a second booking.  The hosts used this game as a consolation game as the they recovered from defeats by Manchester United and Arsenal recently.

Brendan Rodgers’ side moves up one place to fifth on the table with 57 points from 32 games, just one point above Southampton.  As for John Carver’s men, who suffered a fifth straight league defeat, they remain 13th with 35 points and will be keen to secure at least one more victory to avoid any potential relegation battle jitters in the season run-in.
