Liverpool’s chances of qualifying for the Uefa Champions League knockout stages were kept alive as they played out a 2-2 draw against Ludogorets Razgrad in a Group B match at Vasil Levski Stadium on Wednesday evening. Real Madrid’s win over Basel in the other group game means the Reds, who are on four log points, are still in contention. Ludogorets are also on four points with an inferior goal difference to the English club.
Liverpool will now have to beat Basel in their last group B game in order to qualify for the knockout stages of the competition unless Ludogorets thump Real Madrid on the same day. It was a disastrous start for Brendan Rodgers’ side after a mistake by Simon Mignolet, who parried a Marcelinho shot straight into Dani Abalo’s path, who made no mistake and slotted home in the third minute. It wasn’t long before the visitors levelled matters five minutes later through Rickie Lambert who nodded the ball home off the post and made it 1-1.
Liverpool took the lead for the first time in the game in the 36th minute when a pass from Raheem Sterling was well finished by Jordan Henderson. Henderson had a chance to finish off the game in the 65th minute but he put the ball over the bar after another impressive pass from Sterling. The Reds looked to be taking the game home before Georgi Terziev headed home from a corner to level matters and the spoils were shared.
