Liverpool Destroy Red Devils

Liverpool scored three unanswered goals to sink Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon in an epic English Premier League match.  It was a contest between the two most successful clubs in England with different ambitions.  The Red Devils were looking to creep into the fourth spot in the hope of securing a Champions League berth for the next campaign while Brendan Rodgers’s men were looking to revive their title aspirations.

Rafael was lucky to remain on the field after committing two bookable offences with the latter being a handball inside the box resulting in a penalty in the 34th minute.  Steven Gerrard took the spot kick and sent David De Gea the wrong way to secure a 1-0 lead for his side heading into the break.

With just one minute into the second stanza, Phil Jones fouled Joe Allen inside the box and the referee pointed to the spot.  Gerrard took the spot kick and again got the better of De Gea.  Wayne Rooney cried wolf as the referee waved play on in the 54th minute after being brought down at the edge of the box.  The home side had a chance to decrease the deficit through Juan Mata in the 66th minute but his shot was blocked by Liverpool’s defence as MarouaneFellaini failed to feast on a rebound.  Nemanja Vidic was red carded in the 77th minute for a second bookable offence when he fouled Daniel Sturridge in the box.  Gerrard was looking for his hat-trick but this time hit the post from the resulting penalty.

Luis Suarez made it 3-0 in the 84th minute when a tame shot by Sturridge landed at his feet and the Uruguayan slotted home to wrap up a glorious day for the Reds, and more misery for David Moyes and Manchester United.
