Bidvest Wits has recorded a sixth consecutive win in all competitions after a 1-0 win over Polokwane City in the Absa Premiership clash at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday. Polokwane came into the game looking for revenge considering they lost to the same opponent 5-0 less than two months ago. The Clever Boys’ intent was to revive their league hopes and catch log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.
Even though the visitors were without their top goalscorer Dane Klaite, it would not make too much of a difference ot the final outcome. Gavin Hunt’s men managed to put the home team under a lot of pressure throughout the game. Dillon Sheppard’s in-swinging corner threatened but was cleared out of danger as the fixture remained goalless before Cole Alexander and Jabulani Maluleke had their long range shots to try and put Rise and Shine on the board but it did not trouble Moeneeb Josephs.
In the second stanza Phumlani Ntshangase gave the visitors the lead with a clinical finish. Ben Motshwari sent his shot wide later in the game but in the end Hunt’s charges won the day to keep alive their fading title hopes. As for City, this result hardly eases the club’s relegation fears.
