Mamelodi Sundowns needed extra-time to defeat Highlands Park 1-0 in Sunday’s Nedbank Cup clash at the Makhulong Stadium. Keagan Dolly played a killer pass to pick out Khama Billiat but his shot was wide. Highlands goalkeeper Tapuwa Kapini was tested by Themba Zwane with a long range shot, but he made a comfortable save.
Both teams failed to create clear cut opportunities and so it was to 0-0 going into half-time. In the second half, Pitso Mosimane introduced Katlego Mashego in place of Mogakolodi Ngele in the hope of finding a goal. Simphiwe Tshabalala nearly had an opener for the visitors, but was denied by Denis Onyango.
The chances dried up and both teams failed to find a goal so the game went to extra-time. Dolly stole the moment with a stunner from the edge of the box to give the visitors the breakthrough. Onyango was made to work in the end as he made some beautiful saves to deny the National First Division side an equaliser.
The defending champions recorded an unfashionable win, but they are through to the Last 16, which Mosimane might say is all that matters.
